The Meaning Behind the Name Sishwati Marie

Introducing Sishwati, a brand inspired by the strong women in my life. Named after my grandmother, a talented seamstress and pattern maker. Her name ‘Sishwati’, originating from the Lozi-speaking people of Barotseland in Zambia, means sweet like sugar cane. My late mother whose name was Mareba or sometimes called Maria, was a passionate journalist who loved playing with style and had a real love for clothes.

After losing my father, our lives changed drastically. My mother, a young widow, couldn’t afford much. We wore second-hand clothes and switched schools. Despite the challenges, my love for art and fashion was born.

Naming the brand after these powerful women only made sense and I had the privilege of being a part of their bloodline.
